AUBURN CA - Colfax City Councilman Joshua Alpine’s 11th hour filing has created a three-candidate race for the vacant Division 5 seat on the Placer County Water Agency board. Alpine, a hydroelectric system operator, had taken out papers to run for the seat and was supported by agency Director Ben Mavy, who is serving out his term and moving to Wyoming in the late fall. Alpine waited until Wednesday – the last day to file in a five-day extended filing window required because the incumbent chose to not run again. Alpine has served on the Colfax City Council since 2003, including two years as mayor. He will join former Auburn mayor Cheryl Maki and Colfax resident Otis Wollan, who was defeated in the 2008 election by Mavy, in vying for a seat on the five-member Water Agency board. The newly minted candidate said that there was no strategy in his decision to file on the final day available to candidates. Alpine said his work and personal schedule dictated Wednesday’s filing. Alpine said that he’ll now start talking to other elected officials looking for support in the election. “I want to keep rates low and do everything in my power to protect water resources in Placer County from going other places,” Alpine said. Several other local elected seats were kept open for nominations after the Aug. 10 deadline because an incumbent did not seek reelection. The list included the Ackerman School District in Bowman. The single elementary school district picked up an additional candidate. Teacher Stacy Clement will join marketing director Janet Hunt Benson, Kim Williamson, who describes herself as a mother on campaign filings, and incumbent David Slane in vying for three seats on the board. The list of area offices that were still open for candidates through 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, but are now closed with no changes includes: - Placer County Board of Education District 2 - Auburn Union School District - Foresthill Union School District - Placer Hills Union School District - Colfax City Council - Placer Hills Fire Protection District - Foresthill Public Utility District The election will take place Nov. 6.
