Placer's Montoya picks San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl over Baltimore RavensBy: Matthew Kimel, Journal sports editor
On any given Sunday, Placer football coach Joey Montoya could be cheering for any one of 31 different NFL teams.
But on Super Bowl Sunday, he’ll be pulling for his favorite squad: The San Francisco 49ers.
“I’ll be rooting for the 49ers big time,” said Montoya, when asked about his thoughts on Super Bowl XLVII, also featuring the Baltimore Ravens. “I’ve been a Niners fan my entire life. My dad was a huge Niners fan. I remember watching every Super Bowl with him and my brother and family.
“We’ve had a little drought for a while. It’s pretty exciting — our favorite team is back in.”
Montoya expects Super Sunday’s game to be a thriller.
“I think it’s going to be a really good, close game and in the end the Niners will pull it off,” he said, while adding, “there’s no doubt they’ll have their hands full.”
In typical Montoya fashion, the coach is predicting the contest will be a tough battle.
“I think their defense is pretty solid,” Montoya said of Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers. “They cause a lot of conflicts defensively. It’s going to be fun to watch. The last time they played the Ravens, the Ravens kind of took it to them. It’s a new year, a new team, but I think we’re better this year — and we were pretty darn good last year.”
Unlike many Northern Californians, Montoya is a fan of both Bay Area pro football teams. He considers the Raiders to be his second favorite team.
So who is Montoya’s third favorite team?
“Whoever’s playing the Dallas Cowboys,” he said.
