Placer's O'Connor dominates giant slalom

Placer High’s Katy O’Connor won the girls Central Division II snowboarding giant slalom at Northstar by more than 15 seconds Wednesday. O’Connor finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 25.88 seconds, while Colfax freshman Nelly Steinhoff was second overall in 2:41.21. Shelby Young was seventh for the Falcons, followed by teammate Sami Bussinger in 15th. Both the Colfax girls and boys squads finished second, but North Tahoe nipped the Falcons in the combined scoring, 495-492. The Placer girls were third and boys finished fifth (434 combined). Emma Obray was eighth overall for the Placer girls, followed by teammate Olivia Pederson 20th. Demi Gangster finished 26th to lead the Bear River girls. Danny Kern won the boys race for Colfax, finishing in 2:23.96. Placer’s Pete Porata was sixth (2:33.21), followed by Falcons Evan Kaiser (seventh) and Sam Rydell (12th). Jacob Peek and Colton Davenport finished 24th and 25th for Placer, respectively. Matt Baukol was the first Bear River rider in 33rd. The Falcons placed five boys in the top six in Wednesday’s JV race. Colfax still leads the cumulative standings as the teams prepare for the third and final giant slalom Monday at Alpine Meadows.
