Placer High School’s Evan Swayze and Karly Kenworthy ended on a high note Monday in their last giant slalom race of the season before the state championships. Kenworthy claimed her fifth consecutive first-place finish with a combined time of 2 minutes, 11.41 seconds on Sugar Bowl’s McCavish Run. She had the third-fastest time among girls and boys. Teammate Lanae Rothe finished in a tie for eighth place with a time of 2:21.03. The Colfax girls had three top-10 finishes with Nicole Bajka leading the Falcons in second place at 2.18.06. Nicola Lorang was fourth at 2.18.48, and Stephanie Scott was seventh at 2.20.57. “Conditions were great,” Colfax coach Jeff Scott said. “It went really well, and we are looking forward to getting into the state competitions.” Swayze took first place after a tough run last week put him in 11th. His combined time was 2.04.51. Placer coach Matt Conley said Julian Faulkner, who finished second last week, missed a gate on his first run and had to hike up, leaving him in 33rd place after the first run. His smooth second run was fifth quickest, placing him 23rd overall. “When these guys are putting it down on the line, all it takes is one little slip,” Conley said. “The top 12 had a lot of issues on the course because there was a dramatic terrain change and they were trying to get their skis back on the ground as fast as possible.” Dillon Laidlaw of Colfax raced to a 2:15.9 combined time, good for sixth place. Davis won the girls’ team competition with 212 points, and Nevada Union won the boys’ with 212. The teams have four weeks to practice before the California Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation State Championships on March 9-10 at Northstar.
