The Auburn Post 84 American Legion junior baseball squad left the Reno Firecracker Classic with no losses and one championship trophy, posting a 5-0-1 record at the tournament last weekend. Auburn edged Galena 7-6 in Sunday’s title game, getting a two-run home run from Cole Frey in the sixth inning to win it. Ben Consulo pitched seven strong innings and struck out the side in the seventh to finish the game. Kenny Zuvela, Matt Leak, Matt Gifford and Consulo paced the offense for Auburn, which rallied from a 6-4 deficit to win it. In Saturday’s semifinal, Auburn trailed Calaveras 7-2 before rallying. Zuvela scored on an RBI-single to tie the game with two outs in the seventh. Michael Gray added another single before Frey knocked him in with the game-winning run. Earlier Saturday Auburn downed the Reno Giants 6-2 as Leak and Cameron Southward combined on the mound. In a 14-9 win over Spanish Springs, Ryan had three singles, Collin Barrett had a single and a double, Leak was 3-for-3 and Gifford belted a home run. Gray got the win on the mound. Auburn beat the Reno Knights 12-4 as Leak and Southward led the pitching effort. In the tournament opener, Auburn tied Galena 7-7 after the game was called due to a time limit. The Post 84 junior squad is back in action at James Field next Wednesday, hosting the district tournament.
