Post 84 wraps up district title
Gearing up for this week's Area I Tournament, Auburn's Post 84 American Legion baseball team took two of three games in a weekend series from Antelope to capture the District 7 championship.
The wins, which move Post 84's record to 19-7 on the season, now vault Auburn into this week's Area I tourney, which Post 84 will host at James Field in Auburn.
The Area I tournament begins on Wednesday and will run through Saturday or Sunday, if necessary. Auburn will open its Area I action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. by taking on the Fairfield Expos.
In last weekend's action, Post 84 got off to a good start on Thursday by notching a 10-7 win. Alex Mason and Troy Runte combined efforts on the hill for the winners.
At the plate, A.J. Newby and Nick Viola both went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in apiece while Jake Sween and Dave Campbell both added doubles and Adam Tricomo an RBI single.
In Saturday's first game, Post 84 wrapped up the crown by registering a 12-5 win as Mason had a big game with a double and home run and a pair of runs batted in.
Also having a hand in the victory were Viola, who rapped a two-run double, Jake Jarman with a RBI double and James Harris with a hit and two runs driven in.
Viola picked up the win with four innings of work before Sween tossed the last three innings for the save.
Post 84 dropped the third game of the series, 7-5, despite seven strong innings on the mound from Harris. Swinging big sticks for Auburn were Mason and Viola, each with 2-for-2 games and two runs batted in. Newby added a 2-for-3 outing while Tricomo was 1-for-1.
