Prop. 2 jeopardizes farming industry

-A +A
Vote no on Proposition 2. Did you know there is virtually no veal industry in the state of California? Did you know there are approximately 3,000 sows in the state of California? Did you know there are 20 million hens in this state all raised by local California farmers? Did you know this initiative does not stop eggs raised in traditional housing systems from being imported into our state from other states and countries? Did you know that California has the strictest food safety laws in the country? If you vote yes on Proposition 2, you will be eliminating an entire farming industry — one that provides a local, sustainable, affordable high protein food product to all Californians. You will be exporting jobs to states outside of California. You will cost the state more than $600 million in lost economic activity. You will be putting our consumers at risk for food-borne illnesses as we import eggs from areas not subject to our strict food safety laws. The initiative process is flawed. Animal-care decisions should be made by veterinarians, animal scientists, and food safety experts — not by those who do not have the wherewithal to research the subject and make their decision based on emotion and not science.
