Prop. 2 offers animals humane treatment

-A +A
Proposition 2 embodies a simple precept: The farm animals we rely on for food should be treated humanely. On large industrial farms in California, 20 million veal calves, breeder sows, and egg-laying hens are confined so severely that they can barely move. These animals, restricted from basic natural behaviors, live in profound deprivation. Proposition 2 would end these inhumane confinement practices, requiring that farm animals be given enough living space to turn around, lie down, stand up and fully extend their limbs. Battery cages, veal crates and gestation crates have already been phased out in the European Union and other states. It’s time for the Golden State to do the same. Proposition 2 is a non-partisan measure endorsed by The Humane Society of the United States, the California Veterinary Medical Association, the Consumer Federation of America, the Center for Food Safety, the California Council of Churches, the United Farm Workers, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the Sierra Club. This Election Day we have an opportunity to show basic humanity and decency toward millions of farm animals, while promoting safe and sustainable agriculture. Let’s wave goodbye to the worst cruelties of factory farming by voting yes on Proposition 2. Benjamin Davidow on behalf of board of the Palo Alto Humane Society Palo Alto
