In reference to Patricia Grenfell’s April 4 letter “Defense, big oil stand unscathed,” I’m just amazed how some people did not know the meaning of words and just repeat talking points. Here’s my offer to Patricia. I will give you $100 in cash if you can prove that the government pays subsidies to oil companies. A subsidy is an assistance paid to a business or economic sector. There are no payments from the government to oil companies as subsidies. Oil companies receive tax deductions for drilling costs. That means after they drill a well in looking for oil they did not pay taxes on the money spent for exploration. Remove the tax deduction from drilling costs is just like removing the tax deduction for the interest paid on your house. Using Patricia’ s meaning of the word, the government is subsidizing everyone’s housing by giving that interest tax deduction. John T. Nightingale, Auburn
