Local public safetymen and women were honored for their service at the Auburn Elks annual Elks Public Safety Awards banquet. The banquet, which was held last Friday night, honored nine officers, including many who fought the August 49 Fire. A crowd of 150 colleagues, family and Lodge members attended the event. Laurine Johnson, who lost her home in the 49 Fire, spoke at the event and thanked the service men and women for their hard work during the tragic event that consumed more than 60 homes and businesses in North Auburn. Auburn Mayor Mike Holmes and Elks Exalted Ruler Gene Henggler presented awards to: Auburn Police Officer Dustin McLaughlin, California Highway Patrol Officer Don Ackley, Cal Fire Captain Pete Gallegos, Auburn City Firefighter John Rogers, Placer County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Haskell, U.S. Forest Service American River District 20-year volunteer Fred Sumrall and Foresthill Fire Protection District’s Kathy Wing. Unable to attend were Placer Hills Fire Department Officer Chris Aiello and California State Parks, Auburn State Recreation Area, Officer Guy Chrisos.
