A big second half helped push the Placer High girls soccer team to a Pioneer Valley League opening win over Foothill Monday afternoon.

Hosting Foothill at Railhead Park, the Hillmen broke loose from a 1-1 halftime standoff to notch a decisive 5-1 win over the visiting Mustangs.

Samantha Slade scored a pair of goals for the Hillmen and assisted on another. Slade tallied Placer’s first goal in the opening half and then gave the hosts the lead for good with her second score, 12 minutes into the second half.

“We have some injuries right now but I think we were able to still wear them down in the second half,” said Placer coach Steve Cook who noted that co-captains Olivia Holmes and Cameron Rhode, along with Adriana Hinshaw, sat Monday’s game out.

Also scoring for the Hillmen were Macaylea Mitchell, with a goal and an assist, Sabrina Viscuso, with a goal and a pair of assists, and Brittany Bartle on a penalty kick with 15 minutes to play.

Jenelle Pickard also played well in goal according to Cook as she recorded five saves.

“It should be a good PVL race,” said Cook who after the match viewed Colfax’s 1-0 win over Lincoln. “I think there’s a lot of parity in the league this season.”

Placer will host Center Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Colfax 1 Lincoln 0, at Lincoln

The Falcons used a goal three minutes into the match from Emilee Klug and then used a staunch defense the rest of the way to blank the Zebras.
Playing under the lights, Colfax improved to 5-3-3 overall and 1-0 in PVL action with the win. Colfax goalie Lindsey Platt, a sophomore, played well and racked up three fine saves in the second half.

“It was a tough match,” said Colfax coach Lefty Wilks. “Coming back off the break and drawing a team like Lincoln on the road isn’t easy.”

Wilks noted that Colfax misfired on some additional scoring chances but thanks to strong defensive matches from Amanda Moore, Makenzy Thilmony, Sophie Satterlee and Brittany Thomas, were able to keep the Zebras in check.

Colfax will entertain Foothill Wednesday at 4 p.m.
