Rabbits killed in outbuilding fire

Another blaze scorches two acres in Newcastle
Some 40 rabbits perished in an outbuilding fire on Still Road west of Lake of the Pines Friday afternoon, according to Cal Fire reports. Three outbuildings were destroyed but the residence was unscathed in a fire that remains under investigation, Cal Fire said. Crews were still mopping up at 3 p.m. Friday. The blaze was reported at 12:14 p.m. and seared about two acres. According to Tony Peard, communications operation with the Cal Fire Emergency Command Center in Grass Valley, firefighters responded from the Higgins Fire Protection District, Cal Fire, Nevada County Consolidated Fire and Placer County Fire. “We had nine engines, an observation plane, two air tankers, two water tenders, one helicopter, a hand crew and dozer,” Peard said. Cal Fire spokesperson Lynne Tolmachoff confirmed that one of the destroyed buildings housed rabbits. Cal Fire further responded to another fire at 1:46 p.m. Friday on West Court off Ridge Road in Newcastle. The fire burned four acres was reported contained by 2:36 p.m. after crews responded from Cal Fire, Newcastle Fire, Penryn Fire, Auburn City Fire and Placer County Fire. Two air tankers, a helicopter, eight engines, one water tender, a dozer and a hand crew extinguished the fire, Peard said. One firefighter was treated for heat-related illness. Cause of both fires remains under investigation.
