I am astounded by the uncivil comments printed in the on-line forum against the author of a letter presenting historical facts about Stalin’s forced starvation of millions of Ukrainians in the 1930s (“Stalin killed millions,” Reader Input, Dec. 9). The writer made no comment about current politics or political figures.
The Holodomor (extermination by hunger) is not taught in our schools and the U.S. press did not cover it as it was occurring. The snide, snickering and even vulgar comments belittling the letter writer seem aimed at deliberately deflecting any thoughtful contemplation of the magnitude of this great crime against humanity in Ukraine in the 1930s.
I know someone from Ukraine whose mother told her that within three days the stores were all empty. And it went downhill from there.
Read “Execution by Hunger,” written by someone who survived it.
