Reader input: NRA talks and Congress listens

-A +A

Recently I spoke with a retired teacher friend of mine. We were talking about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary and he said something that I thought about for days afterward.
He said that those six teachers who put themselves at risk to save their children’s lives and died in the process were heroes, and our representatives in Congress will do nothing just so not to jeopardize their jobs.
“Gutless,” is what he called them. “Afraid of the NRA,” he said, “and the money it contributes to their coffers.”
After all this time of watching Congress do nothing, even after hearing the bereaved families of these victims, nothing has changed. The NRA has won again. I can only shake my head and feel shame, for the next catastrophe will come and we will again choose to do nothing.
