Reader Input: The problem is the company

-A +A

I have to respond to two letters published Nov. 7 about the grocery strike, “Who needs the union” by Dean Smith and “Maybe it’s time to drop union” by Barbara Graham.

Retired employees receive no pay for picketing. Also, they pay no dues. The problem is not the union, but Raley’s itself! It wants to take away what people have worked for for 30-plus years. The employees did vote to strike in June. Save-Mart employess settled and made a lot of concessions.

Raley’s employees have stated they would accept the same as Save-Mart but Raley’s said “no.” I learned today that Safeway has agreed to the same contract as Save-Mart. So who is making things worse? Raley’s or their long time employees?
