Reina’s homer lifts Bruins
The Bear River High softball team kept its league title hopes alive by the slimmest of margins Friday at Lake of the Pines.
Sophomore Alyssa Reina smacked a home run in the fourth inning and that was the difference as the Bruins edged Placer 1-0.
The Hillgals turned in one of their best efforts of the season as Kelsey Knox pitched five innings of two-hit ball and Brooke Stufflebean added one scoreless inning.
Kacy Romero had a double and a steal and was thrown out at the plate on a hit by Kaley Gaffney in the sixth inning. Taylor Graham, Mackenzie McGown and Kristen Close also had singles for the Hillgals, who out-hit Bear River 5-2.
Erin Nichol got the shutout for the Bruins as she struck out 11 and did not give up a walk.
Del Oro 13, Granite Bay 0 at Granite Bay — The Golden Eagles claimed the Sierra Foothill League title to themselves with a resounding victory to end the regular season.
Savannah Pingree and Jordan Courage combined on the shutout as Del Oro finished SFL play 10-2. Whitney Smith had two hits and knocked in three runs to pace the offense. Annette Merjano had a three-run double while Aspen Echelmeier collected three hits and two RBIs. Hannah George added two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
The Eagles will open the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs at 7 p.m. on May 21 at the Sac ramento Softball Complex.
