Results are in for the yearly tests that make your children cringe. Monday, State Superintendent Jack O’Connell released the 2010 California Department of Education Standardized Testing and Reporting, or STAR, statistics. Toward the end of each school year, students in second through 11th grades take these tests in a number of subjects including English/language arts, general mathematics, history and science. The tests are required as a measure of the California Public Schools Accountability Act. Results released Monday show the percentage of students at each local school who received advanced, proficient, basic, below basic or far below basic scores. Overall, Placer County scored above the state average. Throughout the state, 52 percent of students scored in the proficient and advanced categories in English/language arts. Placer County scored higher than the average with 68 percent of students scoring in the proficient and advanced categories for English/language arts. At E.V. Throughout the state 48 percent of students scored in the proficient and advanced categories of mathematics for grades 2-7 and end-of-course tests. In Auburn, most elementary schools had more than 50 percent of scores in the advanced and proficient area for English/language arts, mathematics and science. Skyridge Elementary School students scored about 69 percent in the proficient or advanced category of mathematics and science and about 60 percent in the advanced and proficient area of English/language arts. Bowman Elementary School students were also tested in history. Seventy percent of Bowman students received grades in the proficient or advanced category of mathematics. At Placer High School 23.5 percent of students received a proficient or advanced score in mathematics. In science, 37.4 percent of students received a proficient or advanced score. Placer High Principal Peter Efstathiu said he feels Placer High is a very strong school, and scores are steadily increasing. “I do know that as a school we increased (scores) on more tests than we did last year,” Efstathiu said. “There are still areas of science and math we need to work on, yes.” In a press release, O’Connell said California students are improving their scores. “For the eighth consecutive year, California’s public school student performance has improved,” O’Connell said. “Even as schools struggle with the ongoing state fiscal crisis, it is impressive that we are seeing sustained growth in proficiency. California’s standards are among the most rigorous in the nation. I am pleased that more than half of our students are proficient or advanced in English/language arts and nearly half are proficient or advanced in mathematics.” Full test results are available at the California Department of Education’s website at cde.ca.gov.
