Two men were sent to the hospital after their truck, which was hauling a trailer filled with rodeo fencing, hit the guardrail and overcrossing on Interstate 80 at the Newcastle exit. According to Officer David Martinez, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol Newcastle Office, the accident happened at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday. “The driver is coming up eastbound and he basically falls asleep behind the wheel and runs off the road onto the right shoulder,” Martinez said. Martinez said the driver, Jared Jauregui, 20, of Fresno, received minor injuries and the passenger, Stephen Robles, 23, of Clovis, had moderate injuries. Both were transported by AMR ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Martinez said the men are expected to be fine, and although there was an initial concern alcohol could have been involved, the responding officer found it was not a factor in the crash. The California Department of Transportation was making repairs to the guardrail Tuesday morning, and the slow lane of eastbound I-80 was expected to be closed. Some cosmetic repairs were also planned for the Gilardi Road Overcrossing, Martinez said. “(The guardrail) is basically what saved the truck from even more damage,” Martinez said. “I would imagine the big repair is going to be on the guardrail.” Martinez said Tuesday afternoon that the lane had opened by late morning. ~Bridget Jones
