Schauble leads Placer golfers past Bear River

Rob Schauble fired a 2-over-par 38 to earn medallist honors and lead the Placer High golf team to victory in their first match of the season Thursday at Auburn Country Club. Placer shot a 215 while Bear River finished at 240. Taylor Daniels shot a 40 to lead the Bruins, while Placer’s Matt Lunsford shot a 41 and Bear River’s Anthony Ertola finished with a 43. Colfax 199, Mesa Verde 293 at Winchester — The Falcons won their season opener in dominant fashion as junior Danny Kraker shot a two-over par 38 to lead the way. Austin Heikila, Derek Zachman and Kyle Young all shot 39 while Jordan Hartman added a 44 for Colfax. Boys volleyball Placer 3, Woodcreek 0 — Jeff Patton had 16 kills, four blocks and an ace as the host Hillmen swept the Timberwolves, 25-10, 25-23, 26-24. Conner McKenzie finished with nine kills and four aces, Brenden Lewis had six kills and eight digs and Ben Wolken added four kills and 12 digs for Placer, which improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Sierra Foothill League. Setter Josh Newton had 36 assists and four blocks for the Hillmen. Baseball Del Oro 1, Rio Americano 0 at Sacramento — Ben Consulo scored the game’s lone run from third in the sixth inning when Mason Magleby stole second and the Raiders’ throw sailed into center field. Magleby and Consulo combined on a two-hitter in the Golden Eagles’ first game of the season. Magleby allowed both hits in five innings. He struck out 11 without walking a batter. Consulo struck out four and walked one in two innings of relief. Mike Schnell went 2-for-3 with a double to lead Del Oro at the plate.
