School tolerance lessons needed

Recent letters to the editor have certainly pointed out the necessity of the legislation to identify for school children the historical figures who were or are gay or lesbian. These writers claim to be tolerant of gay and lesbian people, yet in the next sentence they are ridiculing them and calling them evil. Can you imagine being a child of such people and having sexual feelings for people of the same sex? These are the children who feel so much shame and non-acceptance that they often commit suicide. These are also the straight children who grow up so repulsed by people different from themselves that they ridicule, bully and sometimes even beat or kill other children whom they perceive to be gay or lesbian. This legislation is obviously needed to give children who are different from the majority of their peers the ability to feel hope that they, too, can grow up to do great things and be accepted by society.
