Only one of 100 California death verdicts have resulted in an execution. The executions occur about 30 years after the crime. The system will cost $1 billion over the next five years and this does not include the trial cost to counties. The cost of suffering to victim families is incalculable. Legal turmoil drags on for decades with appeals. Clemency and parole hearings. The killer often becomes a superstar.
