Should sports pay to rent the field?

I read with great interest the article detailing the concerns of the ability for Placer (High School) music to continue to put on musicals (Journal, Sept. 29). Of even more interest was the principal’s statement that he “Understands the arts and how important it is to the school and its students.” My question back to Mr. (Peter) Efstathiu would be: Do you then also require the sporting teams and other departments to also provide an umbrella insurance policy and rent the school property when they use it — such as the football team and the field, basketball team and gym, etc? I’m not against requiring these activities to provide items to be self-supporting in light of budget cuts, so long as they are applied equally to everyone. Robert C. Nowack, Auburn
