One American in five — Americans whose first language is English — cannot read. Sadly, once again local libraries face slashed state funding. Governor (Jerry) Brown’s proposed budget will eliminate all California Library Literacy Service funds, a small but crucial part of California’s local library services. As a long-time Placer Adult Literacy Service volunteer, I see how the ability to read lifts up people’s lives — and the entire community. More adults than ever need reading help: to seek and secure jobs, to support their families, and to become voting, contributing citizens. Call or write our state legislators today. This small budget item makes a big difference to adults who cannot read and to our entire state. Improving literacy makes good economic sense. Linda Frederick Yaffe, Auburn
