Sierra College women's basketball coach Brandie Murrish made things look easy last season. She knows the going will be tough this time around in the California Community College state playoffs. The second-year coach guided the Wolverines to a No. 3 seed in the Northern California Regional after they finished second in the Big 8 Conference. Sierra will host No. 14 Chabot tonight at 7 p.m. They're a very solid team at that 14 spot, Murrish said. They definitely didn't squeak into the playoffs. It should be a good game. The Wolverines (26-6) are looking to return to the state's elite eight. In Murrish's first season after taking over for longtime coach Roz Goldenberg Sierra made it all the way to the state championship game. We're hoping that experience pays off from last year, Murrish said. Our goal is to get back there. Sophomores Tamar Gruwell and Katie Kelig will be the focus of Chabot's defense tonight. Both were named all-state selections this week while sophomore Annelise Miller joined Kelig and Gruwell on the all-Big 8 team. Murrish loves Miller's versatility. The 5-foot-10 Rocklin High graduate is a defensive force and is relentless on the offensive glass. She's really been playing some great basketball, Murrish said of Miller. She just gets after it. With a win tonight, Sierra would land a spot in the NorCal final round and host another playoff game March 8 in Rocklin.
