Sierra One Win Away From State Soccer Final Four
Sierra College is one win away from reaching the California Community College Athletics State women’s soccer Final Four following Tuesday’s second round playoff win over Evergreen Valley of San Jose.
Receiving a pair of goals from Miani Mahannah, the Lady Wolverines posted a 2-1 win over Evergreen Valley to advance to the semi-final of the Northern California regional Saturday at Fresno City College.
The match, which will begin at 1 p.m., will be the second meeting of the season between two two schools. Fresno defeated visiting Sierra, 2-1, back on Sept. 14 in a non-conference match.
Mahannah, a sophomore forward from Antelope High, delivered her second goal in the second half to break a 1-1 tie in Tuesday’s match that raised Sierra’s record to 15-5-3 on the season.
Fresno City, the No. 1 seed in the North, advanced by virtue of its 5-0 blanking of No. 8 Mendocino. In other matches Tuesday, No. 2 seed American River ousted defending state champion Santa Rosa, 8-7, on penalty kicks after the two teams battled to a scoreless draw.
American River is slated to play either Foothill or San Francisco City College on Saturday to determine the North’s other berth to the state tournament set for Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at Mt. San Antonio in Walnut.
Sierra College’s women’s volleyball team opened Northern California Regional play with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-22 win over Ohlone of Fremont Tuesday night.
The Lady Wolverines will advance Saturday to play at American River at 6:30 p.m. in a second round match. American River defeated Foothill in three games on Tuesday.
