TAHOE CITY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a skier who was caught in an avalanche near a Northern California ski resort has died at the hospital.

Officials say 29-year-old Benjamin Brackett died late Thursday, hours after the Olympic Valley man was rescued.

Placer County sheriff's officials say the avalanche happened on back-country terrain south of Alpine Meadows Resort. Brackett and two other skiers reportedly were climbing up a mountain on skis, which possibly triggered the avalanche shortly before 3 p.m.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin says Brackett was carried nearly 300 feet down the mountain and thrown against a tree. He was found by his friends pinned against the tree and partially buried in snow.

Rescuers on snowmobiles reached the group around 4:20 p.m. and took Brackett to a Truckee hospital in critical condition.
