Smotherman defines champ

With all the great performances by local high school athletes, the recent California State High School Golf Championship won by Del Oro’s Austin Smotherman deserves proper perspective (“Smotherman adds state title to resume,” Journal, June 7) .
This is truly a once-in-a-generation performance by a local prep athlete to top all comers in an individual sport hotly contested statewide. Smotherman is likely the first such individual state champ since the incomparable Lindsay Hyatt who won three national titles and four state titles at 800 meters from 1996-1999.
Congrats to Austin and best of luck on the PGA Tour.
