3:10 p.m. UPDATE: Road conditions are “icy and wet and slippery” in the Sierra on Interstate 80 Tuesday afternoon, according to Officer Josh Varanini, of the Gold Run California Highway Patrol office.

“We have snow up here on the top,” and big-rigs heading west are being turned around at the Donner Lake interchange in Truckee, Varanini said. Caltrans continues to check trucks for chains at Applegate, but there are currently no other holds going east or west on I-80.

12:45 UPDATE: During the last hour, heavy snowfall has been sticking to cars and streets, such as Auburn Street in Colfax.

On Interstate 80, Caltrans is currently requiring chains on all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Colfax to the Donner Lake interchange.

Snow has been falling as low as Applegate this morning. The flurries began after 7 a.m. but there is no accumulation of snow on the roadways. Trucks are being screened for chains at the Interstate 80 interchange at Applegate.
