Some forget who they’re working for

At a recent meeting of the Auburn Meddlers our chief of police, John Ruffcorn, related in a speech that as a newly hired deputy in the Riverside County Sheriff’s office he was asked by his supervisor, “Who do you work for?” His response was, “I work for the Riverside County Sheriff’s office.” His supervisor corrected him saying that he actually worked for the citizens of Riverside County. Now in Auburn, Chief Ruffcorn retains that philosophy. What a radical idea! A public official who understands and believes that his responsibility is to the public he has chosen to serve. Gosh, do you suppose this notion could drift up and be adopted by our elected officials in the State house? Nah! JOHN DOWNS, Newcastle
