Strong first half carries Eagles past Oakmont

Vikings stage comeback, fall just short
The Del Oro High boys varsity water polo team dominated the first half Tuesday against Oakmont, and then withstood a second half surge to beat the Vikings 17-13 in the Del Oro pool. “Del Oro jumped out fast with a well-balanced offense and played the best half court offense they have played all year,” said Del Oro coach Dave Obert. “We ran a zone drop to limit Alex Obert’s touches on the ball in the middle but quickly learned that Del Oro had a number of boys that could shoot well and put the ball away on our goalies,” said Oakmont coach Mark Plank. “Alex Obert also cleaned up a few rebounds when their shots were deflected back out to central water by our goalie or cross bar.” The Golden Eagles outscored Oakmont 5-2 in the opening period and then 7-2 in the second to take a 12-4 lead by intermission. Oakmont made a bit of a run in the second half, pulling within 13-11 early in the fourth before Del Oro righted the ship and put the contest away. “I was very impressed with how Del Oro finished the game as many high school teams would start to feel the pressure after a large lead evaporates against an opponent that they are supposed to defeat,” Plank said. Taylor Nordell led the Oakmont attack with four goals, while Shane Welch added three goals and two assists and David Smith also tallied three times. Drew Wixon had a pair of goals and delivered two assists, and Steven Gehrmann was the final Viking scorer. Tommy McKenzie reached the back of the net six times to lead Golden Eagle scorers. Obert added four goals, J.T. Rowe chipped in with four goals and four assists, Josh McCormick added two goals and dished out seven Assists, while Peter Weddle had one goal. In other Sierra Foothill League boys varsity action, Granite Bay remained unbeaten by taking out Rocklin 18-3, Nevada Union topped Whitney 11-8 and Woodcreek beat Bear River 12-6. Thursday’s matches begin at 5:45 as Del Oro is at Nevada Union, Bear River is at Roseville, Whitney is at Rocklin and Oakmont is at Granite Bay. The Grizzlies have no JV girls team, so the varsity boys match at Granite Bay will begin at 4:45 p.m.
