I believe that most people say that Placer County is a very blessed place to live. My family?s history goes back to the 1860?s in this area. I am grateful to have resided most of my life in this wonderful region of our country. Now, however, our families and community are being threatened. We are facing one of the worst economies many of us have seen in our lifetimes. Our state?s budget crisis has put a strain on many, including the first responders that keep our community safe. Our local firefighters have had to learn how to do more with less and unfortunately, Placer County is still proposing more cuts due to the budget shortfall. It is estimated that with these cuts, the level of service from our local fire department would be decreased by 33 percent. This means less equipment, less firefighters reporting to emergencies and longer response times. It doesn?t stop there; our community is in danger of increased property loss and increased homeowners insurance. According to actuary/insurance agents I?ve talked to, the cost of business and homeowners insurance can increase 200-300 percent and some may be denied completely, all because of the forced diminished levels of fire service protection. The solution to this is on the June 5th ballot with Measure D. This measure would enact a parcel tax of $40 a year for each of us homeowners, $20 for mobile homes in mobile home parks, and 4.6 cents per square foot for businesses. Measure D would make up for the cuts being made to the fire department. The safety of my family and our community is one of the most important things to me. We need to stand up and support our local firefighters that work hard to keep us safe. You?re probably thinking, ?more taxes?? My background is in the area of finance, so I end to look at this type of decision from a ?return on investment? and it is very clear to me that this is a wise and prudent use of our precious taxpayer dollars. The safety of my family and my community is worth that and much more. For less than $4 a month I can ensure that the next time I or someone I love has an emergency we will have someone available to promptly come to our rescue. This is local money for local safety, it?s that simple. Measure D doesn?t only have my support; it has the support of this area?s political and community leaders. I ask you to join us in June to support our public safety by helping to ensure that we keep our community safe, please vote ?Yes? on Measure D. WAYNE NADER, Auburn
