Taxpayers don’t foot dam cost

A recent letter writer completely misunderstands Congressman (Tom) McClintock’s position on financing the Auburn dam (Reader Input, Feb. 24). As chairman of the House Water and Power Sub-Committee, the Congressman has been very clear that taxpayers should never be required to pay for water and power projects, and that the entire cost should be entirely paid by the beneficiaries of these projects. He has also been very clear that every federal water project — including the Auburn dam — must be subject to a uniform cost-benefit analysis that assures resources go to those projects that offer the highest benefit at the least cost. The suggestion that he has ever advocated that taxpayers ultimately pay for the Auburn dam — or any other water project — is simply and completely false.
