Now that everyone has returned to their homes after averting a catastrophe in downtown Lincoln (Journal, Aug. 26-27), I would like to express tremendous thanks to our city’s emergency personnel who kept us safe. In particular, I would like to thank Fire Chief Dave Whitt who, without hesitation, assessed the enormity of the situation. He quickly brought in reinforcements from neighboring communities long before the team from Texas arrived. Chief Whitt knew what he was dealing with and he responded in ways that are a testament to his leadership skills, his professionalism, his extensive training and his ability to calmly but effectively communicate to us how the city of Lincoln was coping with the challenges brought on by a propane tanker fire. Additionally, I would like to thank Cal Fire and fire departments from our surrounding cities for their contributions; Red Cross for setting up shelters; Lincoln Police Department, especially Lt. Dave Ibarra who alerted downtown businesses of the need to evacuate; city of Lincoln’s public information officer Jill Thompson who kept us up-to-date; and many volunteers, including Citizens on Patrol. Let’s also not forget those city councilmen who stayed in town, were available for emergency meetings and took time to visit shelters, specifically Councilmen Tom Cosgrove, Spencer Short and Mayor Paul Joiner.
