A Republican, Teddy Roosevelt, promoted and signed into law programs, get this: trust-busting, a square deal for the average guy, competition laws, consumer laws and regulatory agencies to protect us from big money, and, lo and behold, the conservation movement. Another Republican, President (Dwight D.) Eisenhower, continued his lead, pushed for and signed the Federal Interstate Highway Act and sent federal troops to enforce desegregation, founded NASA and was a strong advocate for our schools. If the “do nothing” obstructionists of today’s Republican Party were around back then none of this would have happened. Ron Lowe, Nevada City
