About 4,500 volunteers participated in the Great Sierra River Cleanup Saturday in various parts of Placer County and Northern California. Volunteers collected 151 tons of trash, appliances, car parts and other debris from waterways and their surrounding areas, according to Pete Dufour, spokesman for the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, which hosted the second year of the event along with several other local groups. Dufour said some of the more interesting items collected this year included shopping carts, a bottle of moonshine and a boogie board. The cleanup, which is conducted in partnership with the annual California Coastal Cleanup, took place at 125 sites in the Sierra.
