Mr. Smith of Newcastle (Auburn Journal, Feb. 15) stated that he is “convinced” that Newcastle Fire needs additional funds. I don’t know how he became convinced, so please show me. I currently pay a tax to Newcastle Fire each time I pay my property taxes. Why do they need more? Don’t tell me the firefighters are paid minimum wage and the fire station is falling down. Show me a comparison to other fire departments. How much do property owners in Penryn pay for their fire department? How about Loomis, or Auburn, or Ophir? Would a neighboring fire department serve Newcastle if the property taxes were sent to them, instead? How about if some fraction of the Measure B amount – say half – was passed and sent to the neighboring fire department? Too many questions remain for a yes vote from me. Tom Puente, Newcastle
