A word of thanks to the Auburn Journal for your long-term, supportive coverage of local animal-rescue operations in general and the recent Cat House closure threat in particular. The fact that so many people have responded with letters, e-mails, petitions, etc., reflects the fact that this grassroots animal-rescue group is an example of true community spirit and activism. The volunteers and supporters of the Cat House are not driven by self-interest, but by their compassion and desire to help animals that cannot help themselves. Their dedication and hard work are rewarded solely by the fact that thousands of loving homes have been found over the years for cat and kittens. As a long-time volunteer I have seen people of all ages, from children to seniors, helping out simply because they believe it is the right thing to do. This is what community service is all about, and it should be encouraged and supported by our political leaders, not threatened. Please keep that Auburn Journal coverage going. Wayne R.
