Now that the holidays are coming to an end, Placer County residents can make better use of their Christmas trees through recycling. Residents can drop off their used trees for free at Recology Auburn Placer’s transfer station to be recycled. “We encourage them to do that every year. It helps promote recycling,” said Transfer Station Operator Garry Riley. The trees are then taken to the Material Recovery Facility in Roseville where they’re recycled into compost, Riley said. The end product is ground up dark soil that can be used for gardening. Sue Dossa, spokesperson for Recology Auburn Placer, said all the trees brought to the transfer station are recycled and none go to the landfill. “There’s no point in putting them in the landfill,” Dossa said. “You can reuse the chippings for compost or for ground cover and a variety of things.” Dossa said the transfer center normally gets the bulk of used trees the weekend after Christmas and the weekend after New Year. “This weekend will probably be the big one because it’s after New Years,” she said. Riley said they normally receive 300 to 400 used trees every year from Placer County residents, and this number has been increasing. “People are getting more and more conscientious about recycling their trees,” Riley said. “It’s good to see the people recycling their trees here.” Paula Simpson, customer service representative for Recology Auburn Placer, said residents who have green waste service can also put unflocked trees to their green waste containers to be picked up once a week. Trees should have no decorations and should be cut up to fit the green waste containers. Those who have large trees that won’t fit in the containers are advised to drop them off at the transfer station or at the Material Recovery Facility. The Recology Auburn Placer is located at 12305 Shale Ridge Road. The transfer station will accept trees until Jan. 10, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For questions, call (530) 885-3735. ---------------- Transfer Station at Recology Auburn Placer Where: 12305 Shale Ridge Road When: Trees will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Thursday Info: (530) 885-3735 Auburn residents can also bring their used trees for chipping ONLY to the Maidu Fire Station.
