Back from England, Benicia’s Billy Janniro captures AMA national title at Fast Fridays
It was a heck of a homecoming for Billy Janniro. A member of England’s Coventry Bees motorcycle racing team, the Benicia native came home to California to race in the third and final round of the AMA/USA Speedway National Championship Series on Saturday night at the Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. No other rider was even close to Janniro as he rode away with the series title. Janniro racked up 42 points in the series. His 14-point margin of victory over Bart Bast of Auburn was equal to the lead Janniro had built up entering the series’ final round. Janniro won despite suffering a mechanical failure in his first heat race Saturday night. Foresthill’s Kenny Ingalls finished tied for third with Bryan Yarrow, just two points behind Bast. Ingalls was the only rider to score a point against Janniro in the series. The Speedway National Championship Series took place over a series of months, with races held June 7 in Costa Mesa and July 25 in Auburn. Finishing fourth with 25 points was Ricky Wells. Jimmy Fishback came in fifth with 22 points despite not competing in the series’ third round.
