Fire hydrant causes geyser on Nevada Street
Passersby on Nevada Street near the Fulweiler Avenue intersection had reason for a double-take when a fire hydrant was broken off by a passing vehicle's trailer outside Auburn Hardwoods. The ensuing 30-foot-high geyser reminiscent of Old Faithful stayed gushing for about 15 minutes before fire and water personnel were able to shut a valve down. Auburn Hardwoods officer Bob Mason said the driver misjudged a turn. It was obviously an accident and he really feels bad about it, Mason said. The Friday afternoon excitement marked the second time in five years a hydrant had been broken off by a vehicle at the site, he said.
