UPDATE: Man uninjured after tree falls on truck
It was ironic to Steve Tillotson that he left early from his Grass Valley home Sunday morning so he could drive slowly to his job in Auburn to avoid an accident.
Unfortunately, the Grass valley man’s timing put him right under a large tree that fell on top of his truck as he was driving about 50 mph on Highway 49 at about 5:30 a.m. in dark and rainy conditions.
“I was driving along and suddenly I hear a bang crash bang crash and all I can see are branches of trees lying across me,” Tillotson said.
Tillotson’s truck and another vehicle were hit by the tree and four others were involved in the accident that shut both directions of Highway 49 near Carriage Road just north of Lake of the Pines for a few hours Sunday morning.

Tillotson said he watched a driver coming from the opposite direction swerve off the road to miss the tree and end up in a ditch.
Tillotson said he was able to climb out over glass in the passenger side of his truck to get out of the vehicle. He said other drivers were outside their cars and talking with one another.
California Highway Patrol and Cal Trans responded as did PG&E to repair a power line downed when the tree fell.
There was a call to transport victims to a hospital, but no further information was immediately available.
