An open letter to the congress and the president. Subject: Our country’s fiscal nightmare. What is wrong with you? Are each of you so hung up on your agenda that you have no concern for citizens and their financial well-being? Your recent collective inability to make any genuine effort to solve our national deficit and debt problem proves your incompetence to do your job. You look like fools to America, as well as the rest of the world. The legislation you threw at the problem simply won’t cut it. It’s junk. You acted like children, all of you. The result is childish. You know it. We know it. The world knows it. Proof of this is evident in the Aug. 8 headlines about financial markets after Standard and Poor’s downgrade. Think about it. The most powerful nation on the planet has been humbled and embarrassed by your selfish actions, or inactions. Well, here’s a news tip —- America is fed up with you all ignoring our best interests regarding debt, spending, deficits, and taxes. As Howard Beale in “Network” said, “We’re mad as hell, and we’re not going to take it anymore!” If you intend to run for election or re-election in the future, just know this: You need to get your act together, finance-wise, if you expect to win a new term. Voters of the United States have our eyes on you. We won’t vote for you if you don’t stop the insanity and do your job. Count on it. So, it’s time for the elected members of congress and the administration to put aside your pride, and personal agenda, and party agenda and do the right thing. Straighten out this fiscal mess or expect to lose the next election. It’s that simple. If you’re an incumbent, in any office, of any party, your political future in on the line. We’ll be waiting. And watching. And voting. Neil Cochran, Foresthill
