Use that gun safety

Re: “Dog steps on gun, shoots Utah hunter in buttocks,” (Journal, Nov. 30): While this story may seem hilarious, it really shows the disregard that people have today for gun safety in America. That man could have been seriously hurt, or killed, very easily. All guns have safety locks for exactly this reason, but it seems that no one ever uses them. There are over 100 fatalities every year due to hunting accidents (not even counting the times that other people are shot after being mistaken for prey.) There are websites that show accidents dating a long while back and the numbers are staggering. If you are going hunting, please leave your safety on when you aren’t using the gun. Don’t let what happened to this man happen to you. JAY MALONEY, student, Auburn
