NORTH HIGHLANDS — There just is no other way to say it: It wasn’t Valley Christian’s night.

The Lions lost to rival Foresthill 32-13 on Saturday night in a Sacramento Metro Athletic League game at Highlands.

Quarterback Cameron Woodside and running back Nick Norwood sustained injuries, the latter requiring medical care after hurting a rib early in the fourth quarter.

Teagan Mowry took care of business on the ground for the Lions (1-2 overall, 1-1 SMAL), rushing for a 58-yard touchdown in the second quarter. After Woodside’s injury, Mowry stepped in at quarterback and threw three interceptions.

Touchdown runs of 13 yards by Tommy Sawyer and 15 yards by Rocky Thompson gave Foresthill a 16-13 halftime lead, and the Wildfires outscored the Lions 16-0 in the second half.

“On a scale of one to 10, I’d say we’re at a 7½ (in terms of effort),” Valley Christian head coach Todd Conroy said. “We made some mistakes offensively. We’re better. We’re making every effort.”

The Lions roared back from an early 7-0 deficit with a big second quarter. Josh Bowden and Norwood combined for a blocked punt in Wildfires territory, leading to a two-yard touchdown run by Norwood.

Foresthill (2-1, 1-0) ran a pistol offense and completely disregarded the kicking game, going for two points after every score. The Wildfires converted on each attempt and took off in the second half following Thompson’s 59-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Wes Archbold rushed for 76 yards in 12 carries for Foresthill, which outgained Valley Christian 299-132. Mowry led the Lions with 90 yards in 10 carries.

Valley Christian next travels to Clarksburg on Friday to play Delta (0-3, 0-2). Conroy said it will take a mental effort to improve play moving forward.

“We need to see more poise, particularly just getting ready,” Conroy said. “We have to win like they (Foresthill) do. We have to want to win like they do.”
