Valliere scores three touchdowns as Placer Midgets avoid Natomas sweep

Todd Valliere ran for 137 yards and scored three touchdowns and the Placer Junior Hillmen Midgets beat Natomas 27-20 Saturday in a must-win game. The Midgets improved to 2-3 with two games left in the regular-season. The top four teams in the conference advance to the playoffs. Placer led 27-13 entering the final quarter and held off a late rally after the Nighthawks recovered an onside kick. Quarterback Logan Strange completed two passes, including a 35-yard touchdown strike to Valliere. Colton Blackwell rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown and Kelton McDonald added 39 yards on the ground. Valliere and Strange will join Austin Le Bleu, Philip Tuttle and Cameron Scott Nov. 21 at Sacramento State for the Shriner Bowl, to be played after the Causeway Classic rivalry game. Natomas swept the other four divisions over the weekend. The Nighthawks beat the Hillmen 32-0 in Jr. Midget action as Placer was unable to sustain an offensive drive until the second half. Dustin Edwards led the way offensively with 13 carries for 50 yards, while Ryan Gray and Tyler Gums combined for 40 yards on 16 carries. The Placer Jr. Midgets fell to third place in the conference. Natomas won the Pee-Wee game 32-6. The Nighthawks routed the Hillmen in Junior Pee-Wee action 48-0 and won the Mighty Mite game 26-6. The Junior Hillmen host Whitney on Saturday.
