What kind of store burned?

Not too long ago I believe it was Gus Thomson who wrote about them putting in a garden in the field just past the State Theater on Lincoln Avenue (“Veterans, community, team on Downtown Auburn garden in vacant lot,” Journal, May 22).
He said there was a hardware store that had burned down years ago. I was there when it burned down just by chance but I believe it was a paint store instead.
In fact, I think it might have been named “Smith Family Paints” but I have not found any way to prove that. I even Googled old Journal stories but came up empty. I’m sure there are longtimers in this town who remember the name of the business more accurately than I do. It would be interesting to find out.
