LAKE OF THE PINES — Bob Jenkins swore he’d never run again when he got out of the Marine Corps more than 40 years ago. But when his wife C.J. picked up jogging as a hobby, Jenkins knew he had no choice but to strap on his running shoes. “When we got marries, she started running with all these younger guys,” Jenkins said. “I thought I’d better get off the couch and join her.” Jenkins began tracking his mileage nearly 30 years ago. On Thursday in front of more than a dozen friends and family members, Jenkins went out on a quick half-mile jaunt with his dog Dharma to complete his 25,000th mile. When he finished, the crowd raised glasses of Gatorade to Jenkins, whose feat was a matter of persistence according to his wife. “He’s just an everyday man who kept at it,” C.J. said. Jenkins never ran more than a marathon (26.2 miles) at one time, but he remained consistent with his runs. The Jenkins moved to Lake of the Pines from Los Gatos in 1999 and Bob had around 17,000 miles in his log books. He churned out the final 8,000 miles over the past 12 years, mostly on the scenic trails of the Sierra foothills. Jenkins said the Tarahumara Native Americans of Mexico inspired him. He also talked of running as mindless meditation. Jenkins admitted he was slightly melancholy after reaching the 25,000-mile mark that had been a goal for so many years. “We’re constantly chasing down goals that aren’t quite satisfying,” Jenkins said. “Now I have to set another one and go after it.” The Jenkins coached track and field together at Magnolia Middle School for several years. They are now real estate agents. The 25,000 miles Jenkins ran is slightly more than the distance around the earth at the equator. C.J. gave her husband a commemorative sweatshirt that read, “Magellan never made it… I did! Ran 25,000 miles”
