Timberwolves build big lead, knock off unbeaten Bruins
Woodcreek jumped off to its first stellar start of the season and finished with a 35-7 nonconference win at home over Bear River on Friday night. “We jumped on them early,” Timberwolves coach John Hildebrand said. “We’ve started out slow in games this season. Tonight’s emphasis was, ‘Let’s go right from the start.’ ” Injury-riddled Woodcreek (3-1) finally gave itself some breathing room early in a game and now welcomes a bye week to give the team a chance to recuperate. Bear River went into the game 3-0. After a win over Oakmont last week and sustaining more injuries, Hildebrand had concern going into Friday’s match against a tough and physical Bruins team. “The opening kick was the start of the whole thing,” Bear River coach Scott Savoie said, referring to his team’s struggle against Woodcreek. “We got knocked on our heels early.” The opening kickoff started with a 54-yard kickoff return by J.J. Nourth. The Timberwolves turned that into a touchdown on a 25-yard run by Blake Cervantes less than three minutes into the game. Quarterback Shaun Mize doubled Woodcreek’s lead to 14-0 on a 25-yard keeper for a score with 40 seconds left in the opening quarter. The Timberwolves snuck in a third touchdown just before halftime when Mize connected with Justin Rogers on a 30-yard pass for a 21-0 lead. It only got better for Woodcreek, which scored again on a 34-yard interception return by Dylan Zuverink for a 28-0 edge in the third quarter. Zuverink has returned three interceptions for touchdowns this season. Bear River finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard run by Justin Butler. Mize threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Luke Summers with 5:11 left for the 35-7 final. Mize had two touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown to go with 160 yards passing. Woodcreek held Bear River to 58 yards passing. The Bruins ran on 50 of their 59 plays for 194 yards. Woodcreek has a bye next week. Bear River will go to River Valley. Junior varsity Bear River 20, Woodcreek 14 – Seth York caught a late touchdown pass, and Vince Fernandez made the two-point conversion, but the Timberwolves were done in by turnovers. Fernandez scored Woodcreek’s first touchdown on a two-yard run.
