A freestyle wrestling club has begun in Auburn to teach the style of wrestling that has been commonly seen at the Olympics in past years.

“It's about having fun and learning a life skill,” said Placer wrestling coach Don Packheiser, who runs the club.

“Team Green” Wrestling Freestyle & Greco meets twice a week and training is led by experienced and certified coaches and technicians — background checks included.

It cost $100 to participate in the training, which began last week and goes through May 29-30, depending on age groups.

Little Grapplers, third-graders and younger, meet Tuesday and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the E.V. Cain Upper Gym, as do fourth- through seventh-grade Grapplers.

Green Beasts, a group for eighth-graders and above, meet Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Placer High Wrestling Room.

The price of the club includes insured team practices, a team shirt, shorts and a USA wrestling card, which is required to wrestle.

Tournaments will be held on Saturdays.
