Freshman Johnny Zieour pinned his opponent in Tuesday night’s final match, capping the Del Oro High wrestling team’s thrilling 35-33 win over visiting Nevada Union. The Golden Eagles (2-0 Sierra Foothill League) lost their first four matches of the dual to fall behind 21-0. However, they only trailed by four points entering Zieour’s 103-pound match. The comeback started when Del Oro sophomore Austin Branum beat NU’s Josh Cena 11-2 at 135 pounds. Kevin Burrage then posted a 12-2 victory at 145 and fellow junior Foster Fretland pulled off an 8-5 upset of one of the Sac-Joaquin Section’s top-ranked wrestlers, Trevor Painter, at 152 pounds to swing the momentum in the Eagles’ favor. Del Oro lost just two more matches the rest of the way. Eddie Love scored a first-round pin at 189 pounds and fellow senior Shane Plummer earned a second-round pin in the heavyweight match, setting the stage for Zieour’s winning pin. “The home side was packed with people, and we gave them their money’s worth,” Eagles co-coach Dave Sanchez said. “I think they’ll come back for another match.”
